Cool Summer Nights
Open till 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays
June 7 - August 30, 2025
The Desert Museum is lovely during the day, but it’s even cooler after dark! Join us every Saturday night throughout the summer to beat the heat while learning something neat! The desert comes alive at night as nocturnal animals awake. Bats perform aerial acrobatics in pursuit of dinner, beavers splash around in their pond, and scorpions glow green under black light. Bring your flashlight and explore, grab a local beer and wander, experience a live animal encounter, scamper in Packrat Playhouse, feel the touch of a stingray, or participate in special nightly activities. See the schedule below for weekly themes.

In September 2023, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission returned pristine samples from asteroid Bennu — a carbon-rich remnant from the early solar system. These samples serve as a time capsule, holding chemical clues to conditions that existed over 4.5 billion years ago, when the planets were forming. In this talk, we will explore the initial results from the analysis of Bennu’s samples, including the discovery of organic molecules and salts that suggest the presence of water-rich environments and the building blocks of life.
Dr. Pierre Haenecour grew up in Brussels (Belgium) and graduated with B.A. and M.S. degrees in Geology and Geochemistry from the Free University of Brussels. He then moved to St. Louis (Missouri) and obtained a M.A. degree and a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis. His background is in geochemistry and cosmochemistry, from terrestrial samples (e.g., Pb and Zn isotopes in Archean komatiitic lava flows) to primitive extraterrestrial samples (e.g., meteorites and micrometeorites), using a variety of analytical techniques (e.g., multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and secondary ion mass spectrometry, Auger and Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy). As an Assistant Professor at LPL, his research interests focus on the identification and coordinated micro-analytical study of circumstellar (presolar) grains and organics in primitive planetary materials, such as meteorites, micrometeorites and interplanetary dust particles.
