Description: Onionweed is both a federal and state of Arizona listed noxious weed that threatens rangelands and riparian areas in southern Arizona. The grounds of St Augustine Cathedral in the heart of Tucson is one of the hotspots for this invasive plant in our area. Although we were able to remove the onionweed from this site last year, we caught it late and many of the plants had already set seed. This year, we have a mass of seedlings that need to be pulled to prevent the same thing from happening again. Join us to learn about this plant first hand. Interesting fact: this infestation is centered on the grounds of the Marist College building, the only three-story adobe building in Arizona which also happens to house an affordable senior housing community. Surely worth protecting?
Meeting Location: SW corner of the St. Augustine Cathedral parking lot (S Church ave and W McCormick St). Please do not park in the lot of the Marist building as space is restricted.
Event location: 235 S Church Ave, Tucson, AZ 85701
Volunteers: 0 registered out of a total capacity of 12
Tools Provided: Contractor trash bags, small hand picks, gardening gloves
Bring: Drinking water, your favorite hand weeding tool, if you have one
Wear: Comfortable desert gardening clothes, a hat
